Wonder Woman had left Themyscira and landed on the island of Aeaea with Mary Marvel by a staircase that would take them further into the island, where they could see magic lightning shooting into the sky. While heading to the island, Mary explained that she, Cassandra, and Yara had gone to find the sorcerer Circe and see if her knowledge of transformation magic might help restore everyone infected by the Beast Boy spores. When they arrived, a large wave of spores was waiting for them. While the group had managed to destroy most of the spores, Cassandra and Yara transformed into animals and turned against Mary. Their strength overwhelmed Mary, so she sought assistance from Wonder Woman.
Seconds after landing, Wonder Woman and Mary heard growling noises and saw a large anthropomorphic female gryphon approaching them. From the jacket and T-shirt it wore, Wonder Woman realized this beast was Cassandra. Then, from the sky landed a female anthropomorphic beast with the torso of a puma, the wings of an eagle, and the lower half of their body that of an anaconda. From the clothing this one wore, Wonder Woman could tell it was Yara.
Wonder Woman was surprised during her fights with the beast creatures. She had not faced one who had turned into a mythical creature, let alone a hybrid of multiple creatures.
“What happened to you?” Mary asked with a shocked look on her face.
“What do you mean?” Wonder Woman questioned Mary.
Mary responded, “When I left, they looked nothing like this. Cassandra was just an eagle, and Yara was just a puma.”
Wonder Woman looked back at what her transformed friends were saying. “Let’s hope our plan still works.”
The two transformed Wonder Girls roared. Yara flew up into the sky while Cassandra charged at the heroes. Cassandra was so focused on the heroes that she missed the large shadow in the nearby seawater. As Cassandra passed the shadow, Artemis, still a giant cobra, burst out of the water and coiled herself around the gryphon. Artemis then unravelled some of the Lasso of Truth wrapped around her arm and tied it around Cassandra’s arm.
As Artemis dealt with Cassandra, Wonder Woman and Mary could easily team up to detain Yara. When the two of them brought Yara down, Cassandra’s mind had been restored, and she helped connect Yara to the Lasso of Truth.
With the minds of all her transformed comrades restored, Wonder Woman considered returning to Themyscira to help in the fight on the island. What stopped Wonder Woman from leaving Aeaea was the question of how Yara and Cassandra turned into hybrid creatures and what was causing the magical lightning inland.
Instead of leaving the island, Wonder Woman and the rest of the group headed towards the lightning to get answers.
